Fashion in our Oceans

Ah Plastic.
There is so much plastic pollution in our oceans that it's coming to a point where it's absolutely unavoidable upon going to the beach. The waters that some of us have the pleasure to go boating, jet-skiing, sunbathing and fishing in- where others use our oceans, lakes and rivers to predominantly bathe and fish in, these bodies of water are becoming contaminated by microfibres from our wardrobes excess debris and from our everyday plastic use.
Plastic is used in absolutely everything, the fair-trade tea bottle that we've seen at our local markets, the sustainably produced house-hold cleaner in our laundry rooms and kitchens, at the table sides of each and every restaurant across the globe and even in our Workout Tee or Faux Leather Jacket. It's wild to think about the mass production of plastics- it was once(and still is) an incredible invention, but it's lead to mass pollution of it in our bodies of waters and in our food sources and therefore, in our bodies. Although a great invention in the early 1900's, no one could foresee the inevitable downturn of the use of plastic.
Plastic has been used in Polyester clothing items as well as Nylon, Acrylic, Rayon and Spandex items for decades. Upon washing these synthetic clothing items, they omit debris into our water sources that often times bypass water filtering plants and end up in the large bodies of water where the debris is ingested by ocean life which makes its way through the food-chain to larger animals of which humans then also ingest. So not only are our precious water resources being polluted by excess plastics but we're ingesting it when we eat from our bodies of water and so is our precious sea life.
 After doing some research in products that are able to cut down on excess debris from our clothing items going into our water sources, front-loading washing machines as well as Patagonias "Guppy Friend" bag, are both products to use in assisting in capturing these excess fibres. Exciting, huh?!
Although these are things that we can invest in to assist in preventing this problem, unfortunately at this time fibres are still going to continue to go into our water sources for the time being. So, with that being said, here is a list of a few things that we can actively do in preventing an excess of plastic debris going into our water sources or ending up on our beaches;
1. Investing in Non-Synthetic Garments and only buying what you need, making it last!
2. Being conscientious of water use when washing your garments, making a point to wash your garments sparingly.
3. Finding a local recycling plant for your plastic recycling needs.
4. Investing in a front loading washing machine or purchasing a "Guppy Friend"

5. Use glass bottles to make and refill household items instead of buying new plastic containers after use expiry.

Voilà! It's all a start, right?!

This information and these tips, they aren't a sure-fire way to save our cute little blue sphere but it's definitely a start to end the mass pollution caused by plastic.
Stay tuned for more, lovely people.

Delaney
